Man rolls vehicle into fairground fence (with VIDEO)

A man was taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center at about 7:30 p.m. Friday after his vehicle rolled over on Lewis Turner Boulevard and crashed sideways into a chain link fence at the entrance to the Northwest Florida Fairgrounds.

Two women who were walking their dogs said they saw the Toyota SUV "flying" through the grassy shoulder before it hit the fence.

"The only thing he said when he came out was that he could not control the car," said one of the women, who did not give her name. "He just came out and everybody was panicking, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?' "

Capt. Stephen Mills of the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department said he heard the accident before being called to the scene.
He was standing in back of the nearby fire station when he heard a bang, like fireworks, he said. He later speculated it was one of the rear tires blowing out.

Mills said he saw the SUV in the left-hand lane heading for the median, but it must have crossed back over into the right lane to hit the fairground fence, he said.

The driver was conscious, but didn't remember the accident, Mills said.

"He's lucky he didn't hurt somebody else," he said, adding there were other cars near the SUV on the roadway.

Florida Highway Patrol will investigate the crash.
